LEADER JEFFRIES STATEMENT ON REP. DAVID CICILLINE’S DECISION TO RETIRE FROM CONGRESS
WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries released the following statement after Rep. David Cicilline announced he will be retiring from Congress to lead the Rhode Island Foundation on June 1, 2023.
For over a decade, Congressman David Cicilline has been a relentless champion for Rhode Island in the House of Representatives. A trusted leader in our Caucus, David has served as Co-Chair of the Equality Caucus, Co-Chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee, where he was instrumental in crafting our 2018 For The People agenda, and, most recently, as Parliamentarian of the Steering and Policy Committee.
An effective and thoughtful legislator, David has been a leading advocate for LGBTQ Americans in the fight for full equality under the law and he has led House Democrats in our efforts to get weapons of war off of our streets to end the gun violence epidemic once and for all. He has been a dedicated defender of our democracy as a senior Member of the House Judiciary Committee and on the floor of the United States Senate as an impeachment manager during the second impeachment of Donald J. Trump.
David is a close friend, partner and advisor to so many of us, myself included, in the House Democratic Caucus. We will miss him dearly, but wish him great success as he begins the next chapter of his incredibly meaningful public service journey.
