LEADER JEFFRIES STATEMENT ON RETIREMENT ANNOUNCEMENT OF CONGRESSMAN EARL BLUMENAUER

October 30, 2023

Brooklyn, NY  – Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries issued the following statement after Congressman Earl Blumenauer announced he would not seek another term in the House of Representatives:

As a Member of Congress, State Representative, County Commissioner and Portland City Councilman, Congressman Earl Blumenauer has served the people of Oregon with distinction for over five decades.

In Congress, Earl has been a fierce protector of our public lands, a staunch advocate for cannabis reform and a champion for livable communities where every family can thrive. As a senior Member of the Committee on Ways and Means, he was an architect of the single largest investment in addressing climate change in our nation’s history. Serving as Chair of the Subcommittee on Trade, Earl ensured that the bipartisan United States Mexico Canada Trade Agreement protected American workers. Perhaps most memorably, as the founder of the Congressional Bike Caucus, Rep. Blumenauer turned his passion for cycling into a movement for safer streets in Washington D.C., Portland and beyond.

Earl and his bicycle pins will be greatly missed after the conclusion of this term and I wish him and his family the best as he begins this next chapter.
