LEADER JEFFRIES STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF CONGRESSWOMAN PAT SCHROEDER

March 14, 2023

LOS ANGELES – House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries issued the following statement on the late Congresswoman Pat Schroeder (D-CO):

Today, House Democrats are mourning the tremendous loss of trailblazing Congresswoman Pat Schroeder.

Congresswoman Schroeder was the first woman to be elected to Congress from Colorado and to serve on the House Armed Services Committee. While she may have broken the glass ceiling as the first, Congresswoman Schroeder’s enduring legacy is that she was far from the last. Throughout her storied life and career, the Congresswoman was a champion and mentor for the generations of women who have followed her path in public service.

The loss of Congresswoman Schroeder comes after we just recognized the thirty year anniversary of the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, one of many ways she fought to make life better for all Americans during her time in Congress.

House Democrats stand on Congresswoman Schroeder’s shoulders and will continue to fight in her honor to move this country closer to its promise of liberty and justice for all. May the memory of her fighting spirit be a comfort to James and their children and grandchildren during this time.
