LEADER JEFFRIES STATEMENT ON GOVERNOR BILL RICHARDSON

Brooklyn, NY — House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries issued the following statement on the late Governor Bill Richardson:

Today our nation mourns the tremendous loss of Governor Bill Richardson, a public servant who dedicated his life to democracy in America and across the globe. Governor Richardson's fight for freedom changed lives from New Mexico to Washington, from the halls of the United Nations to the darkest of detention centers. A Latino trailblazer, he was a fierce advocate for human rights right until the end of his remarkable life, reflected by his recent and well-deserved nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. During his time in Congress, Governor Richardson exemplified the best of the People’s House, staying close to the New Mexicans he was privileged to represent while serving as Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and as a Member of the House Democratic leadership. 

The prayers of the House Democratic Caucus are with Governor Richardson’s family and all of the individuals whose lives were touched by his incredible work and advocacy.
