LEADER JEFFRIES STATEMENT ON THE EXTREME MAGA REPUBLICAN ATTEMPT TO HOLD THE ECONOMY HOSTAGE

Washington, DC – Today, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries released the following statement: 

The United States of America must always pay bills already incurred without gamesmanship, brinksmanship or partisanship. House Democrats will oppose any effort to hold the economy hostage as part of any scheme by Extreme MAGA Republicans to jam its right-wing agenda down the throats of the American people. 

A default on our nation’s debt will hurt everyday Americans and dramatically increase unemployment. It will result in skyrocketing car payments, student loan payments, mortgage payments and credit card bills. Our nation’s borrowing limit must be raised immediately and without drama. There will always be time to debate House Republican plans to enact extreme cuts that will undermine the health, safety and economic well-being of the American people. But this cannot be done in a hostage-taking situation.
