LEADER JEFFRIES STATEMENT ON THE CREATION OF THE BIPARTISAN SELECT COMMITTEE ON THE STRATEGIC COMPETITION BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND THE CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY

January 10, 2023

Washington, D.C. – Upon passage of H.R. 11, Establishing the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries issued the following statement:

“House Democrats have been clear that we are willing to extend the hand of bipartisan partnership on issues where we can work together for the American people, and will also stand up against extremism where necessary. As it relates to the new Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, House Democrats will work in a serious, sober and strategic manner to evaluate our relationship with the Chinese government and to address the rise of authoritarianism globally. House Democrats will firmly speak out against xenophobic rhetoric and conspiracy theories should this committee devolve into extreme MAGA Republican talking points that further anti-Asian hate crimes in this country.

Under the leadership of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and Congressional-Executive Commission on China Co-Chair Jim McGovern, House Democrats have led the way in holding the Chinese government accountable for human rights violations and to international rule of law standards. In the coming days, I look forward to naming Democrats who will represent the American people on the committee.”
