Incoming Leader Jeffries Announces Freshman Steering & Policy Representatives

December 9, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Incoming Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced today that he will accept the recommendation put forward by the class of incoming new Members to nominate Rob Menendez of New Jersey and Hillary Scholten of Michigan to serve as freshman representatives to the Steering and Policy Committee.

“Following the vote held last week by our diverse class of dynamic incoming Democratic Members, which resulted in a tie, I am pleased to announce that Rob Menendez and Hillary Scholten will represent the new Members on the Steering and Policy Committee. Representative-elect Menendez will serve as a voting Member of the committee during the first session of the 118th Congress and Representative-elect Scholten will serve as a voting Member during the second session beginning in January 2024. We look forward to working with both of these talented individuals on matters of importance to the incoming class throughout the entirety of the next Congress.

Representative-elect Menendez is a fighter for working families and diverse communities in New Jersey. He brings tremendous expertise as a Commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and as a lawyer to the Congress. Representative-elect Scholten is a decades-long public servant, first as a social worker and then as an attorney at the Department of Justice. She is a champion for the hardworking residents of Western Michigan and for making the American dream accessible to everyone.

Both Hillary and Rob recognize that we must continue to fight for lower costs, better-paying jobs and safer communities. I know that as Members of the Steering and Policy Committee, they will continue to put People Over Politics.”
