Incoming Leader Jeffries Announces Co-Chairs of Steering & Policy Committee
Washington, D.C. – Incoming Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced today that he is nominating Congresswoman Barbara Lee of California, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida and Congressman Dan Kildee of Michigan to serve as the three Co-Chairs of the Steering and Policy Committee.
“Under the strong leadership of Representatives Lee, Wasserman Schultz and Kildee, the Steering and Policy Committee will prepare us to hit the ground running in the 118th Congress. The House Democratic Caucus will benefit from their steadfast work ethic, insight and experience as we confront the challenges facing the American people. I know that Barbara, Debbie and Dan share my goal of ensuring that each and every Democratic Member of the House is fully engaged and empowered.
We are particularly fortunate that Rep. Barbara Lee will serve another term as Co-Chair of the Steering and Policy Committee. Congresswoman Lee is a powerful voice for the voiceless who has devoted her life to public service, leading our fight against poverty in America and the global HIV/AIDS epidemic in addition to serving as a passionate advocate for peace throughout the world.
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is a strong champion for women, children and families who has used her role as an Appropriations Cardinal to make meaningful policy change benefiting millions of Americans. Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz became the first Jewish woman elected to the House from the State of Florida in 2004 and has powerfully represented one of the most diverse districts in the country over the last nine terms.
Rep. Dan Kildee is a fighter for working families and the middle class in the Heartland and throughout America. Amid the horrific Flint Water Crisis, Congressman Kildee united Republicans and Democrats to deliver much-needed relief for his hometown. Congressman Kildee is a proven battleground leader who knows how to bring people together to deliver results for everyday Americans.”
The Co-Chair selections are expected to be ratified by the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee in the coming days.
Incoming Democratic Leader Jeffries also announced his appointments to the Steering and Policy Committee: Reps. Joyce Beatty, Salud Carbajal, Angie Craig, Debbie Dingell, Teresa Leger Fernandez, Sylvia Garcia, Josh Gottheimer, Josh Harder, Steven Horsford, Pramila Jayapal, Robin Kelly, Ann Kuster, Grace Meng, Bill Pascrell and Nikema Williams.
