» Hoyer Discussing Future Policies Under the Principle of Pay-Go on the House Floor, November 19, 2009 What this bill does is puts statutory Pay-Go into law. He's right. But what he didn't say to you is when their side controlled the Presidency, the House and the Senate, they jettisonned paying for things. They did away with Pay-Go generally, and what happened? We went from substantial surpluses under the Clinton Administration to substantial deficits under the Bush Administration... [TRANSCRIPT] |

» Democratic Leaders Speak on Health Care Reform on MSNBC, November 07, 2009 Today we will reform health care for America in the House of Representatives. It is a necessity for them because they love their children... [TRANSCRIPT] |

» Health Care Reform Analyzed on the Early Show, November 07, 2009 We hope it will be more than that and if it is, that will be a bonus. But it obviously takes 218 votes to pass the bill. That's what we're looking for. But the real focus is on the substance of this Bill and what it does for America... [TRANSCRIPT] |

» Hoyer Provides Vote Expectancy for the Health Care Bill on ABC, November 07, 2009 That's the biggest hurdle was convincing, as you point out, Progressives and Bluedogs, that the compromises that had been reached, the legislation that was fashioned, is, in fact, good for the country. Good for constituents. Good for small business. Good for their families. I think we've done that... [TRANSCRIPT] |

» Steny Hoyer and Eric Cantor Dialogue Over the Health Care Reform Bill on NBC, November 07, 2009 We're not going to bring it to a vote this morning. Later on this afternoon or this evening we will bring it to a vote. We expect to have 218 votes. We believe the American having millions of uninsured Americans without health care security is not only bad for them but bad for all of us because we're paying more and having a less healthy nation... » Health Care Reform and Afghanistan Topics of Discussion on MSNBC, October 22, 2009 I certainly think that when the House passes a Bill, and you know, Ed, we said we're going to give substantial notice to people, so we have days to go before we put this of the Floor, but when we pass this Bill, it will give us momentum. It will send a signal to the Senate that we believe the overwhelming majority of the American public want health reform... [TRANSCRIPT] |

» Discussion of Health Legislation in Congress on MSNBC, October 01, 2009 I think we will have the Speaker absolutely correct and I think we will have a public option and the difference is how exactly will that public option be framed and there is a difference between the Ways and Means Committee and the vergence of the public option and the energy in commerce public option. We'll get those worked out and I think she's absolutely right, we'll have a public option and, yes, if the Senate Bill does not include a public option, we have to work that out in conference... » Hoyer Talks on the Health Care Plan Debate on Fox, September 29, 2009 In the House of Representatives, I think there's broad agreement that a public option is a very important alternative, which will help to be more competitive environment, bring prices down, and assure availability and insurance for individuals and businesses and families... » On MSNBC Informing of Progress on the Health Care Bill, September 21, 2009 I think Boehner's wrong. I think it is going to pass. We're working very hard on it. I've been working hard on it just today. We're going to be working hard on it tomorrow and the next day and the day after until we get this passed. Clearly, Ed, as you and I both know, the American public is very conflicted, they're very worried that what they have now which they feel some degree of confidence in, they know the prices are going up, they know they're going up very fast and they're going up so fast they may be priced out of the market... » Floor Speech in Response to Resolution Disapproving of Rep. Wilson's Outburst, September 15, 2009 Ladies and gentlemen of the House, none of us, none of us is happy to be here considering this resolution. I know I am not. At the same time, my colleagues, what is at issue here is of importance to this House and to our country. And that issue is whether we are able to proceed with a degree of civility and decorum that our rules and our democracy contemplate and require. The House code of conduct requires that each member, every one of us, each and every one of us conduct himself, and i'm quoting from the rule, at all times in a manner which shall reflect creditably on the House of Representatives... » Remarks on Obama's Speech and Public Option on CNN, September 11, 2009 We want to see a public option coming out of the Conference Committee. What I have said is there's a lot in this bill that is very good, in addition to the public option, and we ought not to just focus on that. However, our objective is to have, as the President indicated in his State of the Union, an option that will bring down costs, will give people an option that they might not otherwise have to make sure that they have affordable quality health care accessible to them... » Impression of Obama's Health Care Speech on Morning Joe, September 10, 2009 In the polls I have seen this morning, they did respond all over the country very positively to this speech. The President did what he needed to do first of all he made it very clear there is a very big problem. We've got to deal with that the present system is not sustainable from a financial standpoint for individuals, for families, for businesses, small, medium and large and for the government... » Hoyer Gives Speech on the Passing of Svend Auken on the House Floor, September 08, 2009 I rise to mark the death of a good friend and a good friend of America. Svend who died last month after a long struggle with cancer. He was the first Vice President of the Danish Parliament and was a political legend in his country. I had the opportunity to meet and work closely with Svend on many occasions, most recently when he was one of my gracious hosts on a trip to Denmark this May... [TRANSCRIPT] |

» Leader Hoyer on Health Care Compromise on Bloomberg, July 30, 2009 I think the Bill that is being marked up now will go under the votes of the Majority of the members of committee. We then have two other Bills that have to be put together with this one. The Blue Dogs had a different perspective, and that is the legislative process. We have brought this to get there hopefully and we will move forward... [TRANSCRIPT] |

» Talking Numbers Behind Health Care Reform on MSNBC, July 29, 2009 I think the American public has been watching a part of the debate both in the Senate and the House and they see a lot of different opinions. But I think they understand and that poll reflects it that they want a health care reform bill. 94% of them you say are concerned that we won't get the job done. I want to assure them we're going to get the job done. And as you said, a little earlier, we made significant progress last night. The Energy and Commerce Committee is back at the table marking up their bill... [TRANSCRIPT] |

» Leader Hoyer on Reforming Health Care on CNN, July 27, 2009 ...the current system is not sustainable. The current system does not include all Americans, and the current system is too expensive and it's not sustainable over the long term. So, we've got to bring the cost curve down, lot of discussion about that. We've got to make sure every American has access to affordable quality health care. We've got to make sure the pre-existing conditions don't preclude people from getting insurance that they need. And we've got to make sure small business can afford insurance. Those are the objectives. [TRANSCRIPT] |

» Building Support for Statutory Pay-go on House Floor, July 22, 2009 I want to say to Ed Lorenzen who worked with Charlie Stenholm on this proposition for over a decade, thank you for the work you have done. I want to say to my Blue Dog friends, thank you for your leadership. And I want to say to my progressive friends who understand the ramifications of spending deficits that adversely affect the most lnerable in our country, vote against this m.t.r., vote for this statutory pay-go, let us get back on the road to fiscal responsibility... » Defining the Health Reform Bill Deadline on CNBC, July 22, 2009 We want to get it through the House by the time we leave for the August break. But that just means the House Bill. That does not mean getting it done. Obviously the Senate has to pass a Bill, we have to go to Congress. The Senate and the House have to agree on one version, and then we have to pass it again through both Houses. The conference sends it to the President. So October is really the target date in terms of a signature by the President. So getting it done would be they're getting it done initially in the House or getting it done finally... [TRANSCRIPT] |

» House Floor Speech on Pay-As-You-Go Budget Rules, July 22, 2009 I said the other night he was my friend, but friends have disagreements, and on this, on fiscal policy, we have had a significant disagreement. I have heard a lot of speakers on this floor talk about how this Bill doesn't get us to where we want to get. I have heard a lot of people talk about how we have four exceptions in this Bill. Most of the people have talked about the four exceptions in this Bill, have repeatedly talked over the last four, five years as to how this was current baseline spending and certainly we didn't have to pay for current baseline spending, i.e. continuing taxes in place... » Overcoming Health Care Reform Hurdles on Fox News, July 22, 2009 What people will continue to do is continue to work on this because a failure for the American people is not an option. We know that we need health care reform. As a matter of fact, as you know the issue in the last Presidential campaign is very much centered on health care reform. Senator McCain, Senator Obama, all of the Presidential candidates. It is no doubt that this was a huge issue for the American people, they wanted to accomplish the objective of bringing the costs down for families, businesses, and individuals. So many Americans are getting health care but not paying, others are having to pay the bill for them... [TRANSCRIPT] |
